My black s8 is for sale. From the outset let me be clear: the car is on the written off vehicles register, and cannot be re-registered.

The car is a 2002 S8 Type-R with 112,334kms. I am the first owner in Australia, and have all the import documentation, when imported it had 103,924kms.

To cut a long story short, after a mild impact into a ditch to the front left of the car, the smash repairer submitting the the damage quote to the assessor lied about a bunch of things damaged on the car, that I later discovered are perfectly ok. A combination of me insuring the car for a lowish agreed value, the relatively high salvage price of the vehicle, high cost of genuine mazda parts and these lies resulted in the vehicle being 'total lossed'. Needless to say I'm outraged that my baby, that is barely damaged, cannot be put back on the road.

To summarise the damage; the bonnet and front bar need replacing, and the left hand guard is slightly bent, but this can be beaten without replacement. The chassis rails are perfectly straight, I have had this tested and measured by more than one garage, so you can be assured there is NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. The dodgy smash repairer claimed the left hand oil cooler, air con core and dryer, radiator and all associated piping were all broken. This is not the case, they are all in perfectly roadworthy condition, other than a few bent fins.

I have sourced a new bonnet (in white), a left hand guard (which you won't need) and front bar reo. These will be included in the sale. All you will need to do is find a front bar to put on the car, and you will have yourself a trackable S8.

The condition of the motor is good. The car is in my garage at home at the moment, and every 2 days I go out and let her idle up to operating temperature. The only issue is a hose or valve has come away somewhere in the rats nest, and I have not had the time or patience to find it. But it's not a huge job.

When I imported it, it came with a carbon fibre cold air intake, and a set of very rare Dunlop Direzza RSC rims in gold, 17x8 front, 17x9 rear. These are one piece forged steel, and super light, only around 8kg each from what I have read. They were only ever sold in Japan and are no longer available. The tyres are Falken 452's, 235/45 front, 255/40 rear with 80% tread. Other than these mods, the car is stock. While on the road, I had the car serviced by Joe Signorelli at Rotormaster. It has never seen a track.

The price I am looking at for the vehicle and all parts described above is $13,000, but I am quite keen on the rims, and would lower the price if we left them out. I am also open to offers. Don't miss this opportunity to take advantage of my misfortune, you can get yourself a very cheap track car with minimal work involved, all because of some unfortunate circumstances.

Stuffbthat mate go through the right channels and get it removed from writeoff list. it can be done but only if you chase it up. How do you still have the car. have you been paid out by insurance and bought the vechile back if so you may not be able to get it removed by accepting there payment you have agree to there terms. if you havent been payed yet dont cancel the payment and get it off the list and repaired. just take it to a different panel shop get a qoute and then start hassling your insurance company

It probably already is, they have found out that it was imported as track only with VIN on VIN job done in Australia.... something isnt right here... why is the car hardly damaged and written off.

Who was you insurance company, whats the panel shop name and location?

I have to stick up for panel shops in general as I work in one,

We quote the job to bring the car back to as new condition, as I can see there is damage to the AC condenser as it is bent like a banana which means that it has to be replaced, same as the LHF oil cooler will need to be replaced as that's bent, as is the power steering cooler line

All these things with need to be replaced and unfortunately there are no non-genuine part suppliers for fd3s rx7s in Australia, hence why the quote was so high

Also if the shop didn't fix these thing and the insurance company inspected the repair then that particular shop would not get any more jobs from that insurer end of story

Okay just from what I can see there is no reason for that car to be classed as a statutory write off (not allowed on the road again). The laws over east may be slightly different but here on the good side of the country that car would be classed as a repairable write off and could be re registered providing it was repaired buy a specialist and passed a series of inspections. (for an impact like that it wouldn't be hard). There's a few things that have me slightly confused.

Usually insurance assessors will independently assess write off's as it's in the companies best interest to fork out the lowest amount possible. This has me thinking that either there is something majorly wrong with the car you may not know about. Or due to the stupidly high cost of new OEM parts + having to deal with Mazda Australia even a small amount of damage is enough to write off a car/ make it too hard basket for the panel shop + insurance company. (this is what I'm guessing Get the car properly inspected and get a report. See what is wrong and then go your your vehicle licencing department. You may be able to get it fixed and back on the road again.

Or part it out if so I've got dibs on the rear bar :p ...

Seriously mate look in to your option about re registering the car.

May I ask what it was insured for? I've seen waayy worse at the auctions as repairable write offs

haha wow didn't expect all these replies

theres nothing shady going on here guys. i imported the car this time last year through j-spec imports, and had the accident late last year. yes i bought it back from the nrma, because at that stage getting it re-registered seemed like an easy task. that was 6 months ago. i've since been turned away by 2 smash repairers who 'didn't want to deal with it'.

the issue is that no one knows anything about the new written off vehicle laws. the rta (or roads and maritime as they now prefer to be known) haven't got a damn clue. it's all handled by some obscure department that refuse to speak to the public.

what happens now is there is NO SUCH THING as a repairable write of in NSW anymore. everything that was written off after jan 2011 or so is classed as a 'statutory write off' never to be registered again. there are exceptions however. you can apply for an exemption if you fit certain criteria, such as hail damage, last of production run, personal import etc. this i have done and i now have the paperwork. however it has taken me so long to find the bits i need that the paperwork is out of date, and besides no smash repairer wants to put his name on the compliance form.

to be honest guys im starting to need a car again and a mates evo is up for sale, i feel like a change. i love my FD and will definitely get another one some day in the future, but right now i just want to start fresh with something new. i reckon this is a pretty good deal, even if someone with the know how wants to part it

Well said... I wouldn't want my car repaired less than 100% either.
I understand the disappointment in the write-off. Totally sucks and when it's your pride and joy it is even worse!
The laws need to reflect write-offs due to parts expense vs. chassis damage as two separate things so a car that is repairable but the expense doesn't give it an un repairable write-off status.
Surely there must be someone with half a brain and conscience in the RTA that can see the car is repairable and lift the un-repairable ban...

yeah, what pstnls said is fair enough, im just a bit dirty about it. those bits would need replacing as far as the guidelines they need to follow go, but not to get the car operating again.

also, someone buy my car
