OK Guys. Cleaning the shed out.

I've got a mould for a vented bonnet to suit an FD RX-7 that I no longer need.

Had a bonnet copied and one made for my race car, so no longer need it. I don't think you'll come across and opportunity like this very often...

A boat builder or bodykit place could make you a bonnet from this (ring and ask for a price). If you're handy with composite materials you could make one yourself from fibreglass / carbon fibre / kevlar if you like.

Make 1, make 2, make 100, I don't care.

If you're really keen you could have a few made and sell them off if you wanted as I know that most FD owners would like to have a vented bonnet and the cost to aquire one from overseas is frightening. I considered this but couldn't be bothered.

The mould is in good condition and has only ever made one bonnet (mine!) It significantly lowered my engine temps and obviously increases airflow and reduces heat soak that we all know these cars suffer badly from!

Here's the bonnet I had the mould made from (marks were just the clear coat peeling that was filled before casting, these are not in the mould):

Here's mine fitted to my race car (before painting of course):

And here it is after painting (I of couse blended headlight covers in and cut some extra holes for additional cooling)

I also have moulds for headlight covers I could include.

Pickup is fine from Newcastle area or I'm happy to package the mould and send it to you at your cost.

Maybe I should just keep it and have some bonnets made for you...

Thought someone would be keen on making some $$$....

Don't know how many times a mould for a vented FD bonnet is going to come along.

Moulds are expensive and difficult to make.

Once you have a mould, making the bonnets is the east part.... :D

Depending on price and demand for them it could be viable for you to produce a few .:)

wjp005
25-03-2009, 11:16 AM
Price would depend on what people would want the bonnets made from.

Firbeglass, Full Carbon (pre preg or wet layed), Also Carbon top layer with fibreglass base would be possible, as would kevlar top layer and fibreglass base.

That's why I though someone would be keen on the mould, then you can have bonnets made in any sort of materials, etc.

I will get prices if people are that keen. If mould doesn't sell soon then that's what I'll do.....hmmm.....

No offence but your bonnet being a No name brand would have to be competitive in the prising stakes for people to consider it .

So the 1st thing you should do is see what name brands bonnets are selling for , see if you can produce an equivalent product at a better price and have them more readily available .

Name brands like RE-Amemiya, Scoot and Others are not cheap!

RE Amemiya AD-9 in FRP, $2300 http://www.rhdjapan.com/jdm-low/RE-Amemiya-FRP-Hood-AD9-20704
RE Amemiya AD-9 in Wet Carbon, $3000 http://www.rhdjapan.com/jdm-low/RE-Amemiya-Wet-Carbon-Fiber-Hood-AD9-20703
RE Amemiya AD-9 in Dry Carbon, $6400 http://www.rhdjapan.com/jdm-low/RE-Amemiya-Dry-Carbon-Fiber-Hood-AD9-51263

Scoot FRP, $3900. http://www.rhdjapan.com/jdm-low/SCOOT-Sports-FRP-Hood-Bonnet-FD3S-RX-7-55626

No-name, probably under $1k. You decide!

25-03-2009, 12:21 PM
I'm getting a boat builder to give me a price now on full fibreglass, full carbon, fibreglass base with top layer carbon, fibreglass base with top layer kevlar.

I would guess they would be able to be produced for easily less than $1k. Probably more like ~$800 depending on materials.

I honestly couldn't be bothered messing around and would rather sell the mould to someone. :p

You are not Auctioning the bonnet to the highest bidder so why not put a price on it ?

Because I wasn't sure what people would consider a fair price.

OK, so it cost me $700 to have made ($400 in materials and $300 for labour)

I guess $500 would seem fair price.

Anyone want it for that?

Brad

Would just rather get rid of it mate.

I'm not out to make a million bucks, just thought a fellow FD owner might like it to have their own bonnet/s made....

Agreed it could be a bargain if you are prepared to invest lots of time effort and monies to reproduce them and possibly on sell them , as i happen to be semi retired i have the time and means to play around with it .

Ok i will come to the party at $200.00 .........if it includes delivery costs .

$200 was pick up price mate. You mentioned you might pick it up.

I'll build a timber crate and pack it up securely so it doesn't get damaged for free, but you would have to pay for freight on top of that.

My work has an account with TNT and I can arrange it all and you could just pay what it costs me if you like.
