    Default White 2001 Type RB

So this morning my FD was given the lethal injection and has unfortunately suffered from a suspected blown motor. Cranked it twice before I heard the dreaded pop. Yesterday she blew a heap of white smoke but I didn't think much of it at the time.

The extent of it is not yet known as its sitting in the garage. Because of this I've decided I just don't have the time and patience to fix her up. Sad story is that the motor was only rebuilt 10,000kms ago so this was totally unexpected.

As a result I am putting her up for sale. I'm the first owner in Australia having been imported back in 2007 with 64,000kms originally on the clock (JOC to prove this) but was sold to me at 34,000km.

Since ownership I put on 30,000km before the motor blew in 2009 so then I had it rebuilt using brand new OEM parts (new housings, rotors and Apex seals). Only put on 10,000kms on the rebuilt motor before she went again.

Sadly for me I used a rebuilder who is no longer in the rotary game and has cut all contact with me.

I'm probably still going through the motions so I may decide to keep her if I can find another motor to swap in but at this stage I am letting go.

I would have bought that for my wife if I was still in Aus...

Bad luck on the engine...of note, who was the builder originally?

His name is Steve Barnfather. Was recommended to me by a friends workshop years ago before they shut down themselves lol.

I don't think Barnfather used new OEM parts in your rebuild. Which is probably the problem..

He's been on Ausrotary a little while ago, although you'd be hard pressed to make a claim after 6 years - even if he still is building.

These things can sap your enthusiasm and empty the wallet!!

Yes it does. I'm definitely throwing in the towel.

At the end of the day he did his job and got paid. My fault entirely for trusting his work.

I just want the car to go to a happy home.

I bloody hope he did because I paid 6k for the parts alone back then!

I feel for you mate, but given what has happened, you'd be questioning that.

Forgive me for being blunt here, but you aren't even sure the engine is damaged yet you're acting like it is.

Have you done any basic checks to see if the engine is showing signs of life? Pulled the trailing plugs and cranked to listen for even pulses? Or better still, had it compression tested?
If it's a blatant failure of one or both rotors, you will know about it as soon as you crank it with the plugs out.
You might be lucky, it could be an ancillary failure of some sort.

Either way, it's certainly worth checking before you fall in a heap.

You're 100% right, I should find out exactly what the problem is and then make my decision. Thanks man, I'll give it a try.

Now that it's been a few days and I've had time to settle down I'll get it towed to a workshop to have it inspected.

Even if you go ahead with the sale it will help potential customers knowing what they're getting themselves into which could make a quicker sale.

I saw that, personally I think you made the right call on this. $8k for a rebuild, manual swap could cost even more on top. With the money from the sale of this, save a bit of cash and buy a good manual car. Maybe a higher spec car?

Might be lucky and find a good Type RS, RZ or Spirit R even... Just be patient...and use JOC check to make sure she's legit.
