    Old Sensor vs New Sensor

    Plug and Play

    Car in question:
Type RZ (S8), Tuned PFC, Catback Exhaust

    First Impressions:
Car started without any problems, drove without any issues, however once the car was warmed up, the idle hunted ever so slightly, it will drop the idle to ~500 and then pop back upto ~900rpm.

I took the PFC controller and increased all my idle rpms up to the closest 500rpm increment and idle hunt was gone and the car runs perfectly.

I cannot say there is any evident difference in the driving quality. However I will be getting the car tuned again very shortly (to get rid of some backfiring from my first tune), so I'll tell the tuner the new sensor is in and lets see if he can make full use of this sensor.

Keep you guys posted on the results.

Final note: The additional length in the wiring now to the IAT makes lifting the UIM a lot easier rather than trying to fiddling blind trying to unclip the OEM IAT haha.

I got mine off with a ring spanner....

I am trying to avoid removing the UIM and i don't have a ring spanner short enough to fit in the gap.

Can you confirm the size required to remove the old one? I am guessing 18mm?

Sorry cannot confirm size, but you can easily confirm it yourself by slipping a spanner over the new IAT you got, they are the same size.

Well than thats strange. My guess was they would be the same size so when I found a socket that fit the new and was deep enough to cover it entirely I thought i was on a winner. But when I try to use it on the standard it seems too big. Very hard to tell though cos I can't see what I'm doing! And looking at your "Old Sensor vs New Sensor" pic it looks like it might be that it is just not deep enough so not actually going on properly.

How hard is it to take the UIM off? I'm a bit scared of doing that...

The UIM isn't too hard to remove, you just need to get it out of the way enough to reach for the sensor.

Follow the instructions on this thread to remove: http://fdrx7.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205

    Good luck and have fun

Hey Eiji did you find a compatible plug? If so where from?
Or did you get one from Dudemaaan?

The all important 3rd picture (UIM Removal) doesn't show up when I view the post

Oh and did you use thread tape?

Doh! I'll upload the pic if I can find it. And nopes, didn't use thread tape. Think I should of?

FWIW I bought and installed one of Brent's sensors a while back for my S6. Unfortunately it was before he offered the plug-n-play harness, so I had to do a little soldering, but no big deal. Since I'd already re-located my IAT to just downstream of the intercooler, it was easy to access.

REVIEW:Noticibly quicker than the stock and quite pleased. In honesty, because my sensor had been relocated, it doesn't heat-soak as much as the one pictured in the video earlier in this thread....so the change isn't as dramatic. But it's still quicker reacting compared to stock (monitored on a PFC commander). It's late fall where I live and cool so it might be even more noticible next summer.
I'm not one to jump on bandwagons quickly or easily. But believe this was still a worthwhile mod...especially given the cost and ease of installation.

Last night it was nice and cool out so I had a chance to tune my air temp corrections table a bit better. It was definitely faster and more accurate tuning them compared to using the stock sensor. Last winter the stock sensor kept getting hotter from each pull and would take forever to come back down, I finally just tuned the fuel maps instead, this sensor allowed back to back runs and was consistent each time so tuning the tables was simple.

My tune is now the same from summer to winter. Before making the adjustments my tune was leaner compared to the warmer weather due to the increased density of the cold air. Given how often I need to retune my car from always changing things around it's very nice to KNOW that the air temps are what is displayed.

On another forum where dudemaaan was selling these it was mentioned but its not critical. I was just curious.

I put Teflon tape on mine to make sure it was completely sealed and add a small thermal barrier from the aluminum to the threads. (not sure if it does much but it won't hurt either)

I do make sure the plastic cage is facing so the air stream flows through it rather then into it. I feel this makes some kind of difference to the reaction time of the sensor, but have no actual evidence to prove or disprove this theory.

    Almost forgot about this thread.

I've recently gone back to my stock ecu due to excessive popping in my PFC tune and I still have th fast reacting IAT sensor installed.

It honestly feels like the car idles smoother and runs a faction better than before.

Yeah everyone that's running the stock ecu has said the car ran better with this sensor. Some couldn't quite put their finger on how it ran better, just that it did and several reported it running better when hot. In any case i'm glad it's workin out for everyone!

Yeah, on decel @ ~2krpm, it would pop like no tomorrow! Going to get my tuner to fix it up when I the rest of my exhaust system.

    I recommend the sensor.

I noticed the smooth idle first coz my gearknob wasn't wobbling/vibrating as much and then whilst driving, on accel, its like having a slightly higher octane fuel. Runs smooth!

Cool, thanks for the info. Hey out of curiosity how long did the sensor take to arrive for everyone with the shipping from US to Aus? I always send the sensor out same day or next day except Sundays, so I'm wondering how long it takes to get there typically?
