Default Customs fees for import purchases over $1000.

When purchasing goods overseas people need to be aware that if the value is over $1000 Australia is going to stick you with a fee! heres some links which explain it all.

and if you want to beat the laws just say that the parts are new and unused and ask who you purchased the goods off to write a quote for less than $1000.

works really well! depends on what you buy though

that will more than likely mess with your insurance though.

Customs are not dumb, if they suspect the goods are worth more than the value u declared they will send out a valuator and thats when u get done with extra fees..

Yes there are plenty of ways to get around it and you won't get picked up on all $1000 shipments automatically.

The best you can hope for if you're dealing with a legitamate company and you have postal insurance on the item is to just ask them to fudge the customs declaration (which they probably won't) and mark it as a gift (this is for items under $1000).

It's a risky business asking them to declare falsely, I know RHD Japan won't do it simply because of the postal insurance, as you need some sort of copy of the customs declaration to make a claim with most of the big companys like DHL and FedEX.

I got picked up on some turbochargers shipped via DHL about 2 years ago, the value declared was $4000 and I had to pay something like $120 and what made it worse was that I had to go to the fucking airport to do this...100km drive away.

Customs may have changed that policy, but food for thought here...i've had several purchases over $1000 and marked clearly and haven't been picked up once since that one time 2 years back so they aren't that vigilant, at least not at Brisbane Customs.

can't you just say it's a gift? I thought if it's a gift you didn't get taxed for it.
cause last time I bought power fc brand new and cost more that $1000 and they put it down as the same amount of money and I didn't get taxed for it.

If anything, ticking the gift declaration, can get them worked up, especially if the insured amount is significant.....someone did that for me unasked. They have the legal right to access your bank or credit card statements if they think something's shonky and then you'll get hit with a processing fee on top of the gst and duty.
